The 7 Mistakes Search Engine Optimizers Make – Part 7

Failure to use keyword text links properly

This strategy is the crux of successful Search Engine Optimization. Without writing 100 pages, let me explain to you why keyword text links are so powerful in the world of SEO with an analogy.
Say that you’re a musician. You’re sitting at a table with 8 other people in a restaurant. The Waiter comes to the table, and after some pleasant banner, he asks, “So which one of you is the Musician?”
Six of your friends point to you, one friend points to your accountant, and your accountant doesn’t say anything.

Who do you think the Waiter believes the musician is?
Even though your accountant is dressed in leather caps and has a pony tail (it’s an off day for him) and LOOKS like a musician, the waiter just saw all of your friends “Vote” for you. The question was “Who’s the Musician” and the answer was 6 “Votes” for you and one Vote for your casual accountant.
The consensus is, you’re the Musician.

In a way, that’s exactly how Google works

Your site can say whatever it wants to about itself. It can say that it’s the best place to go for Power Drills – it can have pictures of Power Drills – it can have the words “power drill” all over the page…
But why should a Search Engine Spider believe that page? Where is its credibility? How do we know that the Power Drill site is telling the truth?
The point is, a Search Engine needs a “correlation” of opinions in order to fully determine what a web site is about – and how it should rank in its Search Engine Results.

A search engine, particularly Google, looks for this “correlation” of opinions in the form of links from other sites to your site. And more importantly, it looks to see what these links say about the site that they’re linking to.
If 1,000 sites say that your site is about Power Drills, and 37 sites say that your competitor’s site is about Power Drills, who do you think the Search Engine Spider is going to determine is more about Power Drills?

The one with more votes

That’s why it’s important that you gather as many links to your site as possible. And while you’re at it, make sure that those links “Say” or “Vote” for your site in the right way.
You don’t want 1,000 sites pointing at your site with the keywords “Jim’s Hardware.” (Well, I guess if you want to rank for the keywords “Jim’s Hardware,” that’s okay.)
But if you want your site to be ranked for “Power Drills,” make sure that those 1000 sites are “Voting” for your site with the words “Power Drills.”

It’s as simple as that

Just like High School, Search Engines will rank a site according to what kind of popularity a site has (Link Popularity) and what kind of Reputation your site has (what do the incoming links or “votes” say about your site?)
And that’s the key. If you know how to get a ton of links, quickly, cheaply, and with the right Link Reputation, you can dominate the Search Engine Results pages.

Mission Accomplished

The 7 Mistakes Search Engine Optimizers Make – Part 6

Failure to provide quality links pages

In the last episode, we talked about how a “Link to Us” page can provide an automated way of getting incoming links to your site. In this episode, I want to take that technique a step further.
I’m talking about a reciprocal link exchange page.

What is reciprocal linking?

A reciprocal link is essentially a bribe. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly legal, morally correct, and in fact, it’s how the Internet was mean to be structured.
A Reciprocal link is where two webmasters or web site owners exchange links. Web Master A puts a link from their Site to Web Master B. Web Master B puts a link from her site to Web Master A. It’s a Link “Exchange.”
Why would you want to do this if you already have a “Link to Us” page? It’s all about your close rate.

When a savvy Web Master finds your site and they see a that you are trading links with other web masters, they are very likely to contact you immediately and request an exchange.
Meaning, you are likely to see MANY more requests for a link exchange than you are to see folks linking to your site because of your “Link to Us” page. Most web masters will not even bother trying to exchange links with a site than doesn’t already have a quality links page.
It’s all about the numbers. You can get more links faster if you have a quality link exchange page.
Now, there are some instances where it’s not appropriate for you to link off of your site. If you’re an educational site, a non-profit site, a charity site – you are probably mandates NOT to exchange links with commercial entities.
But, if you can quickly acquire incoming links by trading links with other web masters –by all means do it.

Are there any downsides to Trading Links?

Not really. But, it will take time. Meaning, every time you get a Link Exchange Request, you need to actually publish the link to the Web Master’s site that your trading with to your Links Page. So, it can take a little bit of time.
The biggest Gotcha is this: You need to have a Link Exchange Page that benefits the Web Masters Exchanging links with you. Meaning – it has to have a decent Google Page Rank.
So, when you’re starting your site, make sure that your site structure includes a page for trading links.

You also want your links page to inherit some of your site’s Google Page Rank, so make sure that you get that page crawled and indexed. In fact, your main links page should have a link directly from the home page. Some Webmasters try to bury their links pages inside their site.
They think they’re not “giving up” valuable PageRank that way, but what they’re really giving up is valuable link partners who won’t trade links with them and their cheesy tactics.
Case in point, on my high ranking wedding favors site, not only is my home page a PR 7, but the main page of my links page is a PR 7 as well! Of course more people want to trade links with me as a result, and every day I get numerous requests to trade links from people who have already followed the instructions on my Link to Us page.

Finally, as with your “Link To Us” page, make sure that you are controlling how the other web masters are linking to you. You can go so far as to provide the HTML code of the link that you want them to use right on your Link Exchange Page.
Reciprocal Linking is the basis for the web. Such linking creates the structure of the Internet.
Not only can it provide a powerful tool for Search Engine Optimization, it can also provide qualified traffic if the sites that link to you have a genuine interest in your site’s industry.

In the next and final lesson, we’ll cover the most important mistake – how to use proper keyword text links – one of the most important factors for Google.

Failure to provide “Link to Us” Information

It’s probably no secret to you (especially if you listened to the Interview I did with Andy Jenkins) that External Linking is tremendously important to your overall Search Engine Strategy.
The challenge is that getting links, while critically important, can be terribly time consuming and ineffective.
There are literally dozens of effective ways to get a mass quantity of links to your site, but one of the most effective, in terms of efficiency, is to create your own “Link to Us Page.”
A Link to Us page is simply a page on your web site that contains very specific information about how you’d like other web sites to link to you.

Why is this powerful?

If your site contains useful information, great or cool or competitively priced products, product reviews, relevant news – any sort of content that other sites might find useful, they might link to your site.
And you know what a link from another site means, don’t you?
Their key to this strategy is that it’s nearly automated. By creating a page that not only contains the “Link To Us” call to action, but also the WAY that you want other sites to link to you, it’s likely that you may never have to be involved in the process.
Remember, getting links to your site is perhaps the most important Search Engine Optimization Strategy that you can do. That’s what has created hundreds of top Search Engine Rankings for my sites and literally creates my income.

In short, it’s always in your best interest to get links to your site. If you can do it automatically, your Search Engine Optimization results will be extraordinary.
Until next time, keep Stomping the Search Engines.
